Eldridge St.

Our thoughts turned to Eldridge Street, 
the first home my parents bought. 
My mom analyzed it as 
congenitally malformed:

"They built it with the light all 
wrong—they put this big hutch where
it blocked the eastern sun. The 
dining room was always dark."

"Oh," I remembered, seeing
only slants of light floating,
films of myself flickering,
the steep and crooked stairway,

the red trim of the railings,
the hurricane, green outside.
