Stars over Mexico

Stars over Mexico
and the pure black
of the earth late at night;
blooms of towns and
spots of light are all there
is, but still, that,
like a spell something cast.

Above, the white of stars;
below, the gold-
orange of towns, streets, posts.
Lines and lines in
between: The horizon
and the sharp-edged
border between nations.

What a scene in the night
of a world of
scenes, in a world of lines
between earth and
sky and amidst the crude
marks of homelands—
where ends mirror ends and

where darkness only marks
and runs on and
takes no form but to ask
questions and say,
“Where are you in this that
I am and how
do you know that which is?”
