Our thoughts turned to Eldridge Street, the first home my parents bought. My mom analyzed it as congenitally malformed: "They built it with the light all wrong—they put this big hutch where it blocked the eastern sun. The dining room was always dark." "Oh," I remembered, seeing only slants of light floating, films of myself flickering, the steep and crooked stairway, the red trim of the railings, the hurricane, green outside. MB 2020
